Below are the candidates running for open positions in the 2018 general election. Election Day is Tuesday, November 6th. Get out and vote!

County Legislative

The Board of Supervisors has both legislative and administrative powers and is the policy-making body for the County government. With its authority to adopt legislation and policies for department operations, the Board sets priorities, allocates resources and maintains budgetary control.

Primary duties of the position will include prosecution of criminal offenses, pretrial preparation by charging decisions, reviewing police reports, witness/victim interaction, pretrial hearings, and legal research, participates in trial work by negotiating case dispositions, meeting with judges, attorneys, officers, and witnesses, and trying bench and jury trials, completes post-trial work by sentencing, restitution hearings, probation review hearings, and contempt hearings for non-compliance with court orders, Participates in mental health commitments, and consultation and training of law enforcement officials.

County Treasurer / Finance Officer

The County Treasurer: is custodian of all county funds. Files a semi-annual settlement with Board of Supervisors and reports all fees collected. Receipts are given of all monies collected and deposited, and records are kept of all the funds. Annually, on the third Monday of June the County Treasurer shall offer at public sale all parcels on which taxes are delinquent. Collects all taxes certified by the County Auditor and collects 1.5 percent interest per month on all delinquent taxes. The first installment becomes delinquent October 1st, and second April 1st of each year. Pays all county warrants drawn by County Auditor. Pays interest on drainage warrants not paid for lack of funds. Apportions monthly all taxes collected to the various schools, townships, town corporations, state and county funds. The County Treasurer, as agent for the state, collects use tax on motor vehicle transfers and also collects license fees on all motor vehicles and trailers. Issues license plates on all motor vehicles and trailers.

County Recorder / Register Of Deeds / Register Of Mesne Conveyance

Records all instruments which maybe filed for records consisting principally of deeds, contracts, leases, easements, plats & surveys, section corner certificates, plat proceedings, mortgages, mortgage releases & assignments, affidavits, federal & state tax liens, military service records, trade names and agreements in addition to numerous other documents Sells hunting, fishing & fur harvester licenses as well as deer & wild turkey licenses, also habitat, migratory birds & trout fees Issues landowner/tenant gun and archery permits. Registers/titles boats, snowmobiles, ORVs & ATVs.Collects use tax for Department of Revenue on recreational vehicles. Registers birth, death & marriage certificates. Issues marriage licenses. Certifies vital record copies. Files detailed reports monthly and annually to the county and to state agencies. Collects real estate transfer tax on conveyances of property. Acceptance agent for U.S. Passport Service. Takes passport and visa photos

County Agricultural Extension Council

Council Members represent Iowa State University Extension and Outreach in their county. Members brings an understanding of local issues to important decisions about educational opportunities. Members bring research-based programs in human sciences, agriculture and natural resources, 4-H youth development, and community and economic development from Iowa State University to your local communities. These programs help citizens solve critical issues affecting their lives. You have the responsibility to be a good steward of taxpayer dollars, investing in educational programs. Members provide mentoring and leadership for county paid staff.

Healthcare / Hospital District

"Adopting bylaws and rules for its own guidance and for the government of the hospital. Procuring and paying premiums on any and all insurance policies required for the prudent management of the hospital, including but not limited to public liability, professional malpractice liability, workers' compensation and vehicle liability. Certifying levies for a tax in excess of any tax levy limit to meet its obligations to pay the premium costs for insurance premiums. Doing all things necessary for the management, control and government of the hospital and exercise all the rights and duties pertaining to hospital trustees unless specifically denied by Chapter 347 of The Iowa Code. Establishing a fund for depreciation as a separate fund. Purchasing, leasing, equipping, maintaining and operating an ambulance or ambulances to provide necessary and sufficient ambulance service."

Soil And Water District

As a commissioner, you'll help guide soil and water conservation programs in the county, and will have the opportunity to influence state and national conservation programs. You'll be expected to take part in monthly meetings, become knowledgeable of soil and water conservation laws and programs, develop and carry out soil and water resource conservation plans, and help direct financial incentive programs. You will be reimbursed for expenses, and be protected from personal liability. You will be involved in publishing an annual report, and assist in the management of district funds and personnel.
