Get StartedThe City of Aurora Charter functions as its local constitution. It is the foundational legal document that establishes the municipality, defines its government structure, outlines the powers and duties of elected officials, and dictates the boundaries of the city’s home rule authority. The Aurora Charter has not been amended or updated since 1985 and needs updating and modernizing to changes that have occurred since 1985. In addition, the City Council believes that the form of government in Aurora should change from its current form – strong mayor, to a city manager-council form of government. This change is driven by a desire to separate citizen volunteer leadership from day-to-day professional administration. A city manager provides administrative continuity. Amendments to the City of Aurora Charter must be approved by the electors of the City of Aurora.
Should voters Approve the updated City Charter?
