Get StartedIt’s time we work towards a smarter criminal justice system. Not only is it the humane choice, but it is the fiscally responsible one as well. We can start by: Reforming our bail bond system and ending debtor’s prison; Limiting civil asset forfeiture to those convicted of a crime; Raising the age of criminal responsibility from 17 to 18; Using restorative justice to reduce recidivism and lower costs; Promoting community policing initiatives that build more trust between our police officers and the communities they stepped up to protect. Ensuring that established incumbent industries don’t use their lobbyists to keep new entrants out. Learn more
Limiting the ability of businesses to impose “non-compete” clauses in their employee contracts. Learn more
Increasing penalties for businesses who delay closing accounts receivable for over 90 days. Too many large businesses today feel like their small business partners are banks – they can draw a 0% loan by refusing to close out an invoice. If the small business complains, they risk being blackballed by the big business. That must stop. Learn more
Ensuring that all our children receive an inclusive education, no matter where they come from or what their individual circumstances may be, is critical to helping them develop their unique talents, achieve their personal goals and contribute back to our community. Learn more
Part of that funding must go to teachers – it’s time for them to get paid. If we want to keep the best and well trained teachers, their pay (including benefits) must be competitive — unemployment is at 3.9% in Texas, and in our free market, if we don’t pay them, someone else will. Learn more
In order to prepare our students for the innovation economy, it’s time we increase our investment in education (both K-12 and learning after high school). Learn more
It’s time to lower the cost for work-study and apprenticeship programs, and restore funding for programs that support small business entrepreneurs. Learn more
It’s time to start re-regulating tuition at our public universities to ensure that we all have a stake in higher education spending. Learn more
It’s time we stopped relying on corporate consultants and let teachers, parents and other stakeholders come together to write an exam that they feel will allow us to compare schools and learn what works (and what doesn’t). Together with systems like CCISD’s Community Accountability Standards, parents can get the most relevant information – when communities engage with school districts and set the standards, students win. Learn more
It’s time to reform our redistricting process. Every 10 years, politicians choose their voters when they draw the lines to suit themselves. We need to move to an independent commission, or a computer model to draw these districts to maximize competitiveness. Learn more
It’s time to reduce the bureaucratic and anti-competitive red tape that stop third party candidates and independents from getting on the ballot. If you choose to not be part of the two big games in town, it shouldn’t be harder for people to even know that you’re a real option. And that includes making sure these candidates have access to a real, usable voter file so they can come knock on your door and ask you personally for your vote. Learn more
It’s time to make districts smaller so your voice is actually heard. Learn more
We need to move to ranked-choice voting: if there are more than two candidates on the ballot, you rank your choices and if your first choice doesn’t make the runoff, your vote goes to your second. Learn more
It’s time for universal background checks. If a court order prohibits you from owning a firearm, retailers need to know so they can act responsibly for our community. Learn more
It’s time we established red flag laws, like the one suggested by Governor Abbott, to remove weapons (after due process) from those that have mental health conditions and could do us harm. Learn more
It’s time we increased support and promotion of firearms with biometric locks – if your phone can open at a touch, so should your gun. Learn more
It’s time we increased penalties, civil and criminal, for the use of firearms by unauthorized users – just like those around car ownership. Learn more
It’s time to increase our investment in mental health care programs so that each of us can get the necessary help we need. That means working with school districts to hire more counselors, working with our counties to stop the jails from being our primary mental health providers, and working with the VA to ensure that Veterans and their families have the resources they need. Learn more
As taxpayers, we have already paid for the Medicaid expansion, which benefits all members of the community, even those who already have healthcare. As Texans, we are missing out on about $65 billion dollars that we have already paid for and that Congress shows no sign of repealing. Learn more
A good place to start is Exploration Green, our community’s effort at turning an old golf course into a detention pond and recreation area. Learn more
As your Representative, I will work to evaluate new taxing options like the X-Tax or FAIRTax. Learn more
