John is a longtime environmental advocate and was awarded the inaugural Visionary Award by the Sierra Club SF Bay Chapter for his leadership in improving the Bay Area's air quality and advancing climate action. His work with the Air Quality Management District to combat pollution — including some of the most stringent refinery emissions regulations in the country — and promotion clean-air transportation highlight his commitment environmental justice and taking bold action on our climate crisis. Alameda County is facing a homelessness and mental health crisis. John understands the complex challenges of homelessness and the urgent need for a stronger partnership between Alameda County and its cities to successfully address homelessness. With nearly a decade of experience as a nonprofit outreach worker and services provider to the homeless, John is committed to creating more shelters with expanded services for mental health and substance abuse, so we can end encampments and bring people indoors. As Supervisor, he will expedite the implementation of California’s CARE Courts in Alameda County, aiding unhoused individuals with severe mental health issues in accessing necessary housing and treatment. Under John's leadership, Emeryville has become a model for walkable, bike-friendly, and transit-oriented living. As chair of the Alameda County Transportation Commission, John led the creation of the first county-wide Bikeways Plan, brought millions of our federal tax dollars back to Alameda County to create safer streets, and strengthened the County's Safe Routes to School program.
