The geography and natural environment of Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard, and Nantucket face significant challenges due to the climate crisis. The Cape and Islands comprise much of the Commonwealth’s coastline and have experienced significant losses in shoreline each year due to erosion. Increasingly intense storms, rising sea levels, and ocean acidification threaten homes and livelihoods. Senator Cyr is resolute in his pursuit of working towards solutions and mitigative efforts to protect our region. The Gulf of Maine and waters surrounding the Cape & Islands are among the fastest warming in the world. Julian led a task force to assess the effects of ocean acidification and wrote legislation to implement its recommendations. Learn more
Cape Codders and Islanders are already witnessing the effects of the climate crisis and rising seas on our coast. Outer and barrier beaches are particularly vulnerable to erosion, in some places leading to an average loss of three feet of shoreline each year due to increasingly intense waves. Low lying commercial streets and historic downtowns are also particularly vulnerable. Julian has secured millions of dollars to restore estuaries, repair and reinforce our coastal infrastructure, and expand storm water and drainage systems to prepare us for more severe storms and flooding. By collaborating with researchers and municipal planners, Julian aims to assist local officials as they plan for the future sustainability of our built environment. Learn more

The need for year-round housing on the Cape & Islands has never been higher. The demand for second and third homes drives our real estate market, in which limited supply and voracious demand leave first-time homebuyers unable to compete. Property owners and landlords have increasingly turned to seasonal rentals, enabled through the popularity of online short-term rental platforms. These factors and more have decimated the stock of year-round rental and ownership options. The Cape and Islands are at the point where many cannot continue to afford to live here. The Seasonal Community designation will provide a much needed boost so that towns across Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard, and Nantucket have more tools to help alleviate the housing crisis. Learn more
Many older adults want to stay on the Cape and Islands when they are ready to downsize, though too few housing units are available in their home communities. Julian supports zoning reform that would increase the housing supply and build the units needed for seniors, including the Affordable Homes Act’s provision that permits Accessory Dwelling Units by-right in single family zoning districts. Too many young people on the Cape and Islands cannot stay and make a life here because of the unaffordable costs of housing. Julian is fighting for a transfer fee on luxury home sales to create and preserve year-round housing so working families can afford to build a life, pursue careers, and thrive on Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard, and Nantucket.
