Every parent works hard to ensure their children have a bright future, but many of Maryland’s public schools lack the facilities and teachers they need to properly educate Maryland’s youth. It is getting harder and harder to afford college, and the costs of preschool put strains on working families. Karen strongly encourages boldly investing in our children’s future. Learn more

Karen believes in fully-funding our K-12 education system with all the materials teachers need to properly educate their students. This means making schools a secure place of learning that gives students the resources and instructions they need to be successful. Learn more

Environment / Energy

Karen is working to mitigate the negative consequences of existing and developing data centers. She has been outspoken in her opposition to the permitting of numerous diesel generators operating as energy backup, showing up at community meetings and calling on the Maryland Department of the Environment to develop strict and transparent rules to protect residents' health. As our Senator, she collaborated with her peers in the General Assembly to require data centers to cover the cost of upgrading Maryland's energy infrastructure and ensuring that ratepayers are not impacted by large load customers. Finally, Karen has put together a workgroup of local experts on power generation and transmission, as well as air and water quality. Their discussions focus on potential policy proposals for the 2027 Legislative Session and draw on ideas and data from around the country. Learn more

Housing

A key aspect of affordability is housing. As Senator, Karen supports incentives to construct more housing; zoning reforms; and the creative renovation of existing spaces to accommodate additional affordable housing. Learn more

Immigration

As the granddaughter of an immigrant who fled Eastern Europe to escape religious persecution, protecting the rights and safety of immigrants is personal for Karen. She is fighting hard to protect Maryland from the onslaught of inhumane immigration enforcement enacted by our current Presidential Administration. Learn more

Infrastructure / Transportation

Frederick serves as a hub for the growing economic sector along I-270 and Karen has a plan to ensure vital transportation/infrastructure systems are in place to aid commuters. Karen believes improving transportation begins with smart growth and improving our existing roadways. She will continue to fight for funding at both the state and federal level for projects that will make it easier to get around town and relieve congestion along I-270. Learn more
