Get StartedFor-profit prison management and private prisons are detestable. Let's eliminate them and renew efforts to assure the personal safety of state prison staff workers. Spending $50,000 a year to secure and maintain each prisoner doesn't seem like a good use of money. We need to look at who’s going to prison, why, and what we can do (other than lock people up) to fix the problem. Learn more
The time has come for legalization, control and taxation of marijuana use. Good or bad, right or wrong, people use marijuana. Prohibition did not end alcohol use (which is more dangerous) and likewise it has not ended marijuana use. While smoking anything is not advisable for health reasons, and without intention to promote it for recreational use, legalizing marijuana use is a matter of restoring liberty denied. Learn more
Support the American Anti-Corruption Act. Renew efforts to restore and preserve the integrity of our public elections in the era of the infamous "Citizens United" decision. Money is not speech and corporations are not people. Fight against corporate sponsored tyranny. Initiate an automatic registration process for those coming of voting age. Enable mechanisms to assure that there is always more than one candidate for every statewide and General Assembly election. Open primaries securely so that voters registered independent of a political party can participate. Fund elections publicly to work around the incumbency fix. Enact more term limits. Fight against gerrymandering. Redistricting should be done by a group of non-partisan citizens not currently holding or running for office in the Commonwealth. Learn more
Let's oppose any federal mandate requiring employers to provide health insurance. Fight for a better system not dependent on employment. Why should employers need or want to be concerned with our healthcare decisions? The excessive amounts our employers pay insurance companies who are profiting from our “coverage” otherwise could be paid to us as employees in the form of higher salaries and wages. Learn more
Let's make an effort to improve public transportation with a focus on efficient passenger rail service between Pennsylvania's population centers. Having been to Europe on a rare occasion, it is amazing how comfortable and convenient rail travel is there. The modern trains provide quiet, efficient and pleasurable transportation. I rode somewhat less comfortable but efficient trains from Pottstown to Philly, to NYC, and to Pittsburgh in 1978. It appears we're moving backwards while other countries are moving forward. Why?. Replacing the residential real estate property tax with a secure and more sensible funding of public education is a largely popular idea. There are adequate taxable assets other than residential real estate or a regressive sales tax to meet the need for adequately funding public education. Let's pursue a sensible change and get it done in our lifetime. Learn more
Let’s increase the minimum wage to living wage from the current $7.25 per hour (which is one of the lowest rates in the nation). Raising the minimum wage in steps to reach $15 hour per hour on January 1, 2023 can work. Tax credits to support businesses with no more than 100 employees may facilitate a compromise to help the 1.6% of Pennsylvania workers affected by insufficient wages. Learn more
