Michigan has very low hazardous waste tipping (dumping) fees; incentivizing other states to bring their toxic and atomic waste to Michigan. I support higher hazardous-waste disposal fees. The money going back to the community should be dedicated to stronger inspections, independent environmental monitoring, emergency preparedness, and protecting the communities that bear the impact. A higher fee cannot become a permission slip to bring in more dangerous waste. We also need stronger enforcement and guidelines as to what we can accept, timely public notice about incoming waste, and accurate monitoring results residents can easily access.
