Get StartedMPD’s system of Citizens Advisory Councils (CAC) is meant to provide a conduit from the community directly into the police department, but they operate very unevenly and generally do not provide the kind of forum that other cities have achieved through independent oversight boards, for example. As a Councilmember, Miguel will bolster VI programs, while insisting that investments be based on rigorous research and data analysis. Miguel also believes in supporting VI at all levels, especially the peacebuilding programs in schools, which build on cognitive behavioral therapy and other approaches to teach young people to defuse conflict instead of reaching for weapons. As a Councilmember, Miguel will support a more effective, data-driven “housing first” approach with no preconditions to accessing housing. The process starts with robust hotline and outreach teams that connect neighbors experiencing homelessness to low-barrier shelters. As a Councilmember, Miguel will champion reforms to regulatory barriers to housing production, for example shortening permitting and approval processes to create housing more quickly and to lower unnecessary costs related to procedural delays. Learn more
As a Councilmember, Miguel will fight for more resources for the Housing Production Trust Fund (HPTF), while ensuring through rigorous oversight that our investment is effectively used, and paired with other resources, to create new affordable homes for households earning up to 50% of the Area Median Income. Miguel knows that we need to stitch together our existing, fragmented infrastructure to provide a safe, connected, and consistent experience for people biking. As one of Capital Bikeshare’s strongest champions, Miguel will also build on his work as an ANC Commissioner to make the bikeshare system a stronger and more reliable part of the transportation network.
