As a lawyer, real estate broker and owner of two small businesses for the last 25 years, Mike has seen just how much business owners in our District, and the state, have suffered in recent years. And, when businesses suffer … employees suffer. That’s why Mike supports measures to retain and bring business (and jobs) back to the District. Mike will embed a permanent business and jobs liaison in his office to help people start businesses, obtain needed financing and tax credits, and ultimately to grow and sustain those businesses and jobs. Mike will aggressively work to encourage media, art, entertainment, music, and event production to stay in, and return to, the District through economic development zones and business, sports, and entertainment corridors throughout the District. With the World Cup and Olympics on the horizon, Mike believes that we have a tremendous opportunity to harness international support for local businesses and to create good paying jobs for the next generation. Mike is an environmental law and policy expert who holds a degree in Environmental Studies and a Juris Doctorate in Natural Resources Law. With three decades of experience working with environmental NGOs and businesses, Mike knows that, while we still remain dependent on fossil fuels, we need to continue to work towards moving away from reliance on non-renewable energy sources and employ Californians in good paying jobs to develop and build the energy infrastructure of tomorrow. As someone who spends a lot of time in the ocean, mountains and desert, Mike also strongly supports preserving our precious natural spaces. This is why Mike supports green incentives in planning, construction, promoting the urban tree canopy and recycling in order to promote public and private partnerships to preserve habitat, fight climate change and create the jobs of today and tomorrow which will build greener communities and a stronger economy. As someone who is regularly in our ocean and as the father of two boys who spend a lot of time on our beaches, Mike knows how important our coastal resources are. This District boasts the coastline from Malibu to Palos Verdes and some of the top tourist destinations in California. We have big and beautiful beaches with tremendous opportunities for protection and recreation. But, Mike also knows that our beaches can be difficult to access, dirty and under-maintained. Often, he believes that we utterly and inexplicably fail to protect sensitive areas of our beaches and oceans. Mike supports common sense initiatives to make the coastline more accessible for residents while protecting our coastal resources and creating more opportunities for existing businesses to thrive along our beachfront communities and to be part of preserving our natural heritage. Homelessness is unacceptable, period. No human being should have to live on the streets or in a vehicle, and no community should have to live with encampments or RVs in front of their homes and businesses. Mike joins the Governor in calling for the enforcement of anti-camping ordinances statewide and will immediately help people to get off the streets by offering shelter and prioritizing mental health, detox, and addiction services, particularly through the CARES Court system. Equally important in solving homelessness is aggressively streamlining the building process to create housing, particularly in urban infill sites and by adaptively reusing existing but under-occupied buildings where appropriate. Mike’s experience over the last decade as a Los Angeles City Planning Commissioner and over the last twenty-five years as an attorney working in building and housing gives him firsthand experience with how difficult the process can be to build good projects in our District. Mike has also experienced how difficult it is for individuals to pay rent, let alone afford to buy a home. We must streamline the process to create new housing and good mixed-use projects at all price levels and create incentives to encourage the development of housing to support working- and middle-class neighbors. This will help ensure that essential members of the community—teachers, public servants, law enforcement, local business owners, and their employees—can live in the communities in which they work. Mike knows all too well that many parts of our District and California are deteriorating. Los Angeles and many of its surrounding communities are aging and badly require rebuilding and renewal. From sidewalks to streets, and from alleys to public spaces, too little of the State’s budget has been allocated toward making the necessary improvements that impact daily quality of life. By leveraging both private development and public funds, aging infrastructure can be repaired and replaced with sustainable and enduring improvements … while creating good paying jobs. Mike wants to ensure that parks are usable, sidewalks are walkable and streets are drivable and rideable for both cars and bicycles alike. Learn more
Too many of our commercial and multi-family zoned neighborhoods are home to vacant storefronts, half empty office buildings and aged and decaying apartment buildings. In a rapidly advancing age of building and energy efficiency, adaptive reuse of existing structures, and infill developments, Mike believes we must not settle for anything less than robust commercial corridors which are walkable, teem with successful businesses and provide abundant housing, at all income levels, in currently underutilized buildings and vacant lots.
