As City Councilor, I will push for Road Diets to be used as a low-cost safety tool, not a tool to boost non-car transportation. I will also push for the use of bicycle boulevards, that will improve the value of our neighborhood streets and actually encourage additional ridership. Learn more
Instead of road diets, we should be investing in "bicycle boulevards". This type of bicycle infrastructure takes existing, low-speed, low-volume residential streets, and configures them to be shared with bicycles. This includes road markings that reminds motorists to share the road, signage that helps bicyclists navigate, and better crossings to help bicyclists safely cross the busier main streets. A network of bicycle boulevards actually creates a Safe and Comfortable environment for bicyclists, encouraging more people to bicycle, and without the consequences of taking away lanes. Learn more
Lanes are disappearing from our streets, to be replaced with bike lanes that no one uses. Instead of taking away much needed road capacity and turning this into an issue of bikes vs. cars, we should instead be looking for better and more innovative ways to allow bikes and cars to coexist.
