It's our drinking water, our air quality, our recreation economy, and our children's future. The Great Salt Lake is at its third-lowest level on record, and the consequences are serious. As the lakebed is exposed, it releases dust laden with heavy metals and other pollutants that threaten the air quality of the entire Wasatch Front. Scientists warn that without intervention, we could face a public health crisis similar to what happened at Owens Lake in California. Air quality is already a pressing concern. Utah's winter inversions regularly push pollution levels into the 'unhealthy' range, affecting children, seniors, and anyone with respiratory conditions.
