The San Bernardino County Superintendent of Schools and its nearly 1,900 employees work in unison with the 33 K-12 county school districts on behalf of the nearly 414,000 students in approximately 530 schools. The county superintendent provides leadership and advocacy, as well as oversees a wide array of services to support student achievement and accountability, fiscal oversight, personnel and credentialing, information technology and direct student instruction for preschool, alternative and special education students. Among the other responsibilities of the county superintendent, according to the California Education Code, include: visit and examine each school in his or her county at reasonable intervals to observe its operation and to learn of its problems; enforce the use of state textbooks and instructional materials and of high school textbooks and instructional materials regularly adopted by the proper authority; and submit two interim reports during the fiscal year to the county board of education.
