Kubs is one of the rare minorities who grew up in Boulder, where his immigrant parents settled in 1979 when very few families looked like theirs. That experience shaped his understanding of what it means to navigate institutions that were not always designed with you in mind. He believes students from underrepresented backgrounds – whether defined by race, religion, sexual orientation, or socioeconomic status – deserve leaders who see their struggles, advocate for their success, and work to ensure that every student has the opportunity to thrive. Improving Student Success and Graduation Outcomes: Strengthening the systems that help students complete their degrees and realize the promise of higher education. Graduation rates at CU Denver and UCCS remain below 50 percent, and many of these students come from immigrant families or less-privileged backgrounds who see college as the gateway to a better life. When students take on significant debt but do not graduate, that promise can turn into a financial and personal hardship.
