Get StartedWomen in every state should have access to safe and legal abortion services thru the first trimester. Medication-based abortions must be accessible to women who currently reside in states where abortion is illegal. Limits on elective abortions in third trimester should be strongly considered, especially beyond the 24th week of gestational age. Hyper-partisan politics and religious absolutism have kept legislators from making reasonable policies on this issue. Policies that reflect the moral consensus of the American people and that are supported by diverse ethicists, medical professionals, and advocates should be pursued. In the meantime, our government should be doing all that it can to provide health education, birth control, health care to child-bearing age women, and to facilitate affordable childcare and other essentials for women who have chosen to continue their pregnancies. I have unequivocal support for marriage equality in that 2 consenting adults, of any gender identity and expression, should be allowed to lawfully wed and be afforded all the rights and privileges of marriage status under the law. Learn more
We need to take an honest look at our culture of mass incarceration, over-sentencing of minorities that was a norm historically and is still a reality in many court-rooms in the present day. The United States has a higher incarceration rate than any other country in the world, yet we call ourselves the Land of the Free. Unlike many modern countries, our criminal justice system has no prioritization of reforming a convict. We do not activate their potential to make better choices or to learn new strategies to handle the stresses that contributed to their poor choices in the first place. Learn more
We must also end the reality of for-profit prisons and detention centers; and the use of a bond-system that keeps non-violent suspects jailed while awaiting trial, costing the tax payors money while being separated from their family and jobs-- all while we are supposed to be presuming their innocence. Learn more
Criminal justice reform starts with ensuring that every citizen maintains rights guaranteed by the constitution including freedom from unlawful search and seizure, a presumption of innocence until proven guilty, a right to due process and a fair trial with competent representation. It continues with fair policing, an end of racial profiling, resolving charging and sentencing disparities, and addressing the "school-to-prison pipeline". Learn more
In the past, changes in energy production led to massive modernization. Rather than pretending climate change does not exist and clinging to past patterns of agriculture and energy use, we should be creating educational partnerships with individuals and corporations doing the work, financial incentives for individuals and companies who facilitate innovation and adoption of new strategies, and funding research that will help us lead global policy and innovation to prepare us for the new changing climate. These initiatives will soften the effects on global civilization and maximize prevention. Learn more
We should get creative with accountability about drug trade and its relation to corruption in foreign governments and its contribution to gang violence and drug cartels in the US. We also need to focus on foreign policy that promotes responsible economic development, education, fair wages and good jobs. Doing so is the best way to decrease the drive for people to come to the US. Also, climate change is a huge driver of instability in the developing countries contributing to the drive toward immigration to the US. Learn more
Modern nations have decided to update their understanding of essential services that a responsible government should provide. They realize that a healthy population is not only moral and rational, but that it is responsible fiscal policy with national benefits that last. It is time for the United States to join the modern world with guaranteed healthcare access and affordability. Learn more
I believe there should be a way forward for folks who have been here illegally but have set up homes, families, businesses, etc. Looking at who has paid taxes and contributed to the good of society through their businesses and other community services and the duration of that investment should be taken into account. I also know that we cannot have or encourage open borders for many reasons (exhaustion of resources in border communities, safety concerns, drug trafficking and human trafficking concerns, etc). But I think the best way to dissuade rampant immigration is our foreign policy. Learn more
We keep them accountable by simplifying the corporate tax code, closing loopholes and expecting that workers are paid first, before outside shareholders. Learn more
Too many times, politicians and pundits have pointed their fingers at workers "not doing enough" to lift themselves out of poverty. But many families are working multiple low-wage jobs just to get their feet beneath them, let alone to be able to step ahead. Meanwhile, their employers, or the benefits industries, become increasingly wealthy and then make shareholders rich, while those doing the work are told they do not deserve raises or increases in benefits.
